May/Jun 1999
In keeping with the May/June theme, I'll kick this issue off by highlighting classmates who have tied the knot over the past few months. Don't worry, for those of you humbugs who would prefer to kick Cupid in the shins every now and then, there's plenty of non-romantic news towards the bottom! In December 1997, Brent Gibson (mp3558@medmail.mcg.edu) wrote that he had recently married Julia Dinello in Bombay and was studying medicine at the Medical College of Georgia. Brent appears well on his way to becoming a military physician, as he was awarded an American Medical Assn. scholarship. Mona Walls (mrw4@cornell.edu) is a web designer at Cornell.
Taking the next step on the road of life, E. Alexander F. Alday (alday@cwix.com), an investment advisor with Prudential Preferred Financial Services, and wife Michelle Hernandez, welcomed their first child, Kyle Alexander Alday, on Oct. 16, '98.
Some overdue news from Neeral Shah (nshah@aecom.yu.edu), who is nearly finished with his second year of medical school at Albert Einstein. Neeral spent the summer of 1998 at the London School of Medicine doing clinical research on malaria and hanging out with the cast of Rent. Neeral shared the following updates on his apartmentmates in May 1998: Collin Pieper was living in San Francisco and working for Apple Computer; Evan Phillips was teaching English outside Tokyo, Japan. Paul Baranello was working for Domino Sugar; Geoff Butler had completed his MS CE at Cornell. In Tokyo, Ching-Ying "Kin-ei" Lin (kinei@interlink.or.jp) is working for Federal Express and has seen Dan Jong '96, Yukari Matsuyama '98, and Jared Bjornholm '98.
In Cincinnati, Mary Gasco (gasco.mc@pg.com), a product development engineer with Procter & Gamble, and Paul J. Rogan have gone back to school part-time to pursue their MBAs at Xavier U. Though work has her traveling quite a bit, Mary enjoyed her three-week trip to Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic over the holidays. She's seen Bryan Hitchcock, Todd Wernicke (both coworkers at P&G), Mike Murdoch, and Todd Zion, a ChemE buddy.
In Los Angeles, Jonathan Matz (jonathan.matz@gs.com) is an investment banker at Goldman Sachs and is "very much enjoying the sun and surf out West," while Nick Halverson (njh4@cornell.edu) took a job as an analyst at Goldsmith, Agio, Helms & Co., a private investment banking group in Minneapolis, MN. Over the past few months, Nick has caught up with Larry Feinblum, Marisa Waldman, Amy Silino, Pete Martelli, and Matt Koerner. Hiromi Ogawa (ho11@cornell.edu) works at Sutton Suzuki Architects in Mill Valley, CA, building houses which are made specifically for no-snow weather (insert Ithaca weather joke here), and Toby Sinton was juggling two jobs: copywriting in San Francisco and researching geological information systems (GIS) in Berkeley. Also in San Francisco, Jonathan Alferness (jalfern@ds.caltech.edu) planned to spend summers working for small computer graphics companies while pursuing a PhD in computer science. Laura Goddard (lgoddard@ucdavis.edu) is working on her PhD in entomology at U. of California, Davis, where she studies viruses spread by mosquitoes and, in her spare time, trains horses for the UC, Davis polo team.
Last year, Stacy Pultorak (sjp10@cornell.edu) wrote that she was enjoying her experience as a human resources manager in Pittsburgh, and expected to be assuming management of the office following her director's departure. Renu Giyanani (rgiyanni@manu.com) ran into Dilpreet Chowdhry in Toronto, Ont., Canada. Hotelies Amy Gust (agust@davidsonhotels.com), based in Atlanta, GA, and Chris Franklin met up with Will Kolbenschlag '96 in Phoenix.
After traveling in Vietnam and Thailand, Michael Jan (mjtigger@ibm.net) began a position at Morgan Stanley Dean Witter in the futures operations department. On Staten Island, Jennifer Hedayati (jsh14@cornell.edu) gave up the corporate world and is teaching in her own public high school, where she's started a costume-design club and portfolio workshop "for all those fashion/art savvy young ones!" Jen notes, "It's the most rewarding work I've ever done! I can't believe I'm getting paid for this!" In addition to her job, she's also studying art education and philosophy at Columbia's Teachers College. In Philadelphia, Amy Blye (amy_blye@mclaren-hart.com) is an assistant engineer for McLaren/Hart Inc., an environmental consulting firm, and lives with Jason E. Cohen, a paramedic at U. of Pennsylvania. In August 1998, she shared the following: Bindiya Patel is working as an environmental engineer in Washington, DC; Nikki Arvanites is working for a marketing firm in NYC; Rachel Chansky and Meghan Work live in Brookline, MA, and work in Boston; Katie Fallon works in Seattle, WA; and Jessica Adema is working on a master's at U. of Virginia.
Jessica Siegal-Willott (jls12@cornell.edu) returned to Cornell after a semester at Purdue and is now enrolled as a PhD candidate in animal nutrition. While awaiting responses for admission to vet school for fall 1998, Matthew Krupnick worked as a veterinary technician in the East Orange Animal Hospital and took science classes at Seton Hall U. Outside St. Louis, MO, Sara Kaminski (Chiroptera@juno.com) is the program instructor for the Wyman Center where she teaches fifth-eighth grades about science and the environment. Sara notes that she found the job thanks to Jon Richard '96.
In Boston, Dara Baker (dbaker@fas.harvard.edu) began her pursuit of a PhD in history at Harvard last year. Katherine Ball (ball@helix.mgh.harvard.edu) worked as a research assistant in the pediatric psychopharmacology unit at Massachusetts General Hospital. Kristen DiNorscia (kris@mit.edu) began studying environmental engineering and toxicology in grad school at MIT. Also in Boston, Michael Feinstein (mlf5@cornell.edu) works and travels as strategic consultant with Gemini Consulting in Boston. In early 1998, Michael was writing a screenplay in his spare time and becoming known for his "rockin' after-hours parties" in the Back Bay. In February 1998, Adam Hocherman (adam.b.hocherman@ac.com) wrote that he had affiliated with ICE, Andersen Consulting's Internet division, and is enjoying his work there immensely.
Taraneh Tehrani (ttehrani@jhsph.edu) was in South America this past year as part of her master's of health science program in the international health department at Johns Hopkins' school of public health. Meanwhile, on the other side of the world, Michael Greenberg is enrolled in the Class of '02 at Sackler School of Medicine at Tel Aviv U. in Israel. After living in Colorado, E. Marc Weideman (weids@frii.com) planned to enroll in the U. of Pennsylvania dentistry school as a member of the Class of '02. In New York, Sarah Snelgrove (smsnelgr@mail.med.cornell.edu) studies medicine at Cornell's Joan and Sanford I. Weill Medical College. Also in NYC for med school is Jennifer Baskind, at the New York Medical College. David Misita (dmisita@caribsurf.com) opted for a warmer climate; he's enrolled at St. Georges U. medical school in Grenada, West Indies.
Mark Benedetti (mbenedet@wvu.edu) is working on a master's degree in English and serving as a resident assistant in West Virginia U.'s finest residence hall, Boreman." Pretty dull, huh?," he adds. Judson Reid (pyj2reid@aol.com) is also making waves these days; in March 1998, he noted that he "recently learned to make some pretty good guacamole."
Keep the news coming!--Erica Broennle, 1678 N. 21st St., Apt. #1, Arlington, VA 22209; e-mail, ejb4@cornell.edu.
